With the introduction of the EU Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR), Kriptomat has been taking proactive steps since 2018 to ensure we remain a secure, transparent, and fully compliant platform for managing your crypto investments in Europe.
This new regulation isn’t just a legal update - it’s a big leap forward in making crypto safer, more trustworthy, and more accessible for everyday users like you.
What is MiCAR?
MiCAR stands for Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, a major piece of EU legislation that sets out the rules for crypto-asset services across all EU member states.
Think of it like this: until now, crypto regulation was a bit of a patchwork. Each country had its own rules (or sometimes, none at all). MiCAR is the EU's way of putting everyone on the same page - a single, harmonised rulebook for the entire crypto industry.
MiCAR covers three big things:
Crypto-asset service providers (like exchanges, wallets, and platforms - that’s us!)
Crypto-asset issuers (companies that create tokens or stablecoins)
Transparency and user protection (making sure users know the risks, rights, and rules)
MiCAR doesn’t cover everything - for example, it doesn’t apply to NFTs (yet) or DeFi protocols that have no central operator - but it’s a huge step forward in building trust and structure in the crypto space.
What is changing at Kriptomat?
Kriptomat has always taken regulation seriously. We’re already fully licensed as a Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) in Estonia, which has been ahead of the curve on crypto laws, and are registered in multiple other markets.
Now, we have aligned with MiCAR and applied for authorisation as a Crypto-Asset Service Provider (CASP) under the new EU rules. Until that licence is granted, we’re still legally operating under our Estonian licence, so it’s business as usual for you.
✅ Your funds are secure
✅ Your access is uninterrupted
✅ Your experience stays easy
What’s changing for you?
Mostly: more transparency, more protection, and clearer rules. Here’s what MiCAR means in practice:
Under MiCAR | What It Means for You |
Custody rules | Clearer info on how your crypto is stored and protected |
Risk disclosures | You’ll know what risks are involved - no surprises |
Complaint procedures | If something goes wrong, you’ll know what steps to take |
EU-wide licence | You can use MiCAR-licensed platforms across the EU with confidence |
Clarity on services | Platforms must be transparent about what they offer and how it works |
